North Beach library could be preserved

It’s only appropriate that library connoisseurs would be at a historic preservation commission meeting on their extended lunch breaks.

At a packed lunchtime meeting that lasted for hours into the afternoon Wednesday, several of them weighed in on whether seven post World War II libraries in The City – and specifically the North Beach branch -- should be preserved.

The North Beach branch is of particular concern because it is the only one in the group that hasn’t either finished reconstruction or started reconstruction under major plans to renovate 16 library facilities in The City.

The commission voted 5-2 to start the process of preserving five of the seven libraries under discussion, including the North Beach branch.

The commission’s decision prevents the North Beach library project from getting construction permits from the Planning Commission for the next 180 days or until another decision is made.

The Marina, Ortega, Eureka and Western Addition branches are already finished with construction, but the commission decided they could still be preserved.

The Parkside and Merced branches are already under construction and starting the process for preservation would mess up their timelines, so the commission will reconsider after they’re renovated.

North Beach's Beautiful Library

Oct 7, 2009

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood.....

Here are a few photos that show what a beautiful building this is. Correct the years of neglect and away we go:

What a joke that these ugly buildings are considered "historical". The NIMBYs in North Beach win again! This is a big loss for the actual library users. No wonder families with children are leaving The City in droves.

Here in SF NIMBYs save mediocre crap like this to prevent anything new being built (god forbid) -- perhaps referring back to the pile of mediocrity that is the main library at Civic Center; meanwhile Seattle gets one of the most stunning, innovative and popular libraries in the world. Good job SF!

The city was trying to jam their $9 million dollar piece of crap new library into North Beach when most every rational person in the neighborhood agrees that the existing library just needs to get fixed up.

I was at the meeting yesterday and maybe I misunderstood, but the Park and Rec, the Deputy Librarian, three architects, and a assortment of North Beach residents including parents, disabled residents, children...you name it were all there to voice their opposition to the landmark status and support for the closure of Mason Street and the building of the new Library. There was nothing ambiguous about what the large crowd representing the neighborhood wanted: A new Library, not a remodel of a failed structure. How the commission( who took a 45 minute break and then came back and cut everyone's speaking time from 3 minutes to one) could vote 2-5 is unfathomable, troubling and pathetic. We will fight on.

I'm Looking For A Hard Headed Woman

Every single neighborhood group is opposed to the new North Beach library scam except for this one group that has no bylaws, no officers, and allows no voting on issues. This proponent group is little more than window dressing for one obsessed woman who has proven herself a habitual liar. Said liar has banded together a small army of ill informed people who have swallowed her ball of crap that this library is good for the neighborhood. I encourage those people to inform themselves of the facts.
