Newsom: No advice for Brown

Mayor Gavin Newsom said he is not going to offer advice to Attorney General Jerry Brown anymore regarding the governor’s race.
“Everyone’s very sensitive every time I talk about Jerry Brown,” Newsom said at an unrelated press conference Wednesday. “I have no advice for someone who’s been a two-term governor [and] is one of the most successful politicians in the history of this state. He’s more than capable of doing what he needs to do to get where he wants to go.”
And right then Newsom, who competed against the attorney general in the gubernatorial race before dropping out last year, offered this tidbit for Brown, who has not yet officially declared his candidacy for governor but has certainly acted like one.
“The question is asked all the time, why hasn’t he filed?” Newsom said. “I want to be supportive of our [Democratic] nominee…but I need to know that he’s going to run.”
But that statement does not count as advice, Newsom said.
“I hope no one accuses me of offering advice,” he said. “I have nothing to offer someone that doesn’t need my advice, except to say, ‘We’re going to have a tough race in November, and we need to organize, and we need to generate enthusiasm with our base.’”
Again, that was not advice. It was, perhaps, a suggestion.
