Newsom: I am not pressuring Muni

By: Mike Aldax

Mayor Gavin Newsom denied reports from a transit blog Web site that said the mayor has been pressuring Muni chief Nathaniel Ford to hold off on extending parking meter hours in The City.

“That’s just factually incorrect,” Newsom said Friday following an unrelated press conference in City Hall. “Though blogs often are.”

No one wants to extend parking meter hours, including Muni, he said.

There’s no arm-twisting going on here, he said.

“We balanced a budget with Muni without extending the parking meters from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” he said, adding the report was creating a “false controversy.”

Then again, Newsom has made it clear he is adamantly against extending meters due to the economy and added burden on merchants.

And as The Examiner reported before, soon after Muni balanced its budget for this fiscal year, its leaders chatted publicly about the possibility of extending meters to deal with upcoming deficits.

Also, there’s a study on extending meters that is soon to be released that analyzes how to do so without making everyone angry.

The study “will be a benefit when we have next year’s budget discussion,” Newsom said. “Now at least we have done our homework first before there’s a proposal so if we do it in the future, we’ll know what to do or how we do it.”

Blogs are often incorrect, as opposed to newspapers always being right? Talk about a generalization.

Streetsblog is not an amateurish website, but a professionally run news outlet, which just happens to take the form of a blog – this should have been said in the article.

Streetsblog is real jouranalism, not some guy in pajamas typing links to stories. They usually scoop the two newspapers about transportation stories. I trust their accuracy more than the chron or the ex.

Why don't we just extend the parking meter to 12 midnight. That way every body knows to stay away from SF. I heard Oakland's restaurants dropped at least 30% in gross the first month after they adopted meter time to 9:00 pm

Newsome, grow a back bone. And just say "yes, I am against extending the meter time to 9 pm".

Why is it that whenever an old-news source (like the Examiner) writes about a new-news source (like a blog), you fail to include hyperlinks? It is like you are trying to hasten your own early retirement.

Got anything to support that claim of 30% drop?

Cities all across the country leave their meters on much later than 6 p.m., regardless of the current state of the economy. Take Los Angeles: Santa Monica, Old Pasadena, and West Hollywood leave meters on until 2 a.m. New York City, Milwaukee, and Miami Beach, run meters until midnight. Denver, Las Vegas, and Washington, DC, run meters until 10 p.m

Some of these cities have been doing this for years, and it hasn't caused their economies to collapse.

This is typical Gavin behavior - instead of engaging with folk who challenge his ideas or politics he ignores, belittles, or runs away from them. Yet more evidence that Gavin is an empty suit and entirely unfit to lead this city or state.

I have an idea for how Muni can recover that deficit--how bout enforcing fares?! When the muni trains leave the underground, they're completely open for free rides, with the exception being the off-chance that a muni cop will be on the train. Take a cue from London or DC--swipe to board or don't board at all!

Newsom has a blog on HuffPost and that is the one that is factually incorrect..just look at the comments section that call out his BS. The facts are true in the blog he dismisses and the meters are not being extended. Newsom is as bad as it gets when it comes to incompetent politicians

Gavin said last week that Oracle generates over $100 million dollars in tax revenue for the City. Talk about making up a whopper...
