Artist may have applauded DPW upgrades

The late North Beach artist Peter Macchiarini might have applauded the crafty sculpting job accomplished by the Department of Public Works.
On Friday, city crews finished work on refurbishing a steep set of steps on Kearny Street between Broadway and Vallejo streets that are named after Macchiarini, an award-winning jeweler, sculptor and photographer.

Macchiarini held art studios near those steps, which are quite important since the street is too steep for pedestrians to rely on flat sidewalks.
The steps were named after the artist in 2000, with Mayor Gavin Newsom, then a supervisor, supporting the commemoration.
Macchiarini was one of the first artist in the field of avant-garde jewelry, helped establish the first merchant sponsored art festival in the Bay Area (Upper Grant Avenue Street Fair), and helped create the San Francisco Arts Festival, among other accomplishments, according to the resolution describing the commemoration.
