Arts in storefronts debuts on Market Street on Friday

The dim facades of vacant storefronts on Market Street will lose some of their gloom later this week.

The City’s oft-talked about Arts in Storefronts project will kick off on Friday, with temporary exhibits scheduled to be unveiled in empty buildings on Market Street as well as in parts of the Tenderloin, Bayview, and Mission District. The opening celebration of the pilot program — which includes 11 original art installations and two large murals — will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday at 989 Market St.

Representatives from the Mayor’s Office, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the Arts Commission are expected to attend the event on Market Street, which is part of a larger overall program to revitalize San Francisco’s central thoroughfare.

Last month, The City instituted private automobile restrictions to speed up transit operations, increase safety for bicyclists, and improve access for pedestrians on Market Street. Other plans for the artery include more cultural exhibits on public plazas, and increased outdoor seating.

Either a nice form of creative expression or a commentary on the incompetence of business-unfriendly San Francisco politics for those empty storefronts.

Some say that there are too many perils attached to this coming World Cup. They talk about the problems of security, the crime rate and they say that football's greatest tournament should really have gone, as is usually the case, to somewhere rich and relatively antiseptic. They say that coming to a country with still so many problems to resolve is simply reckless.
