A Whole Foods fix on Haight Street?

By: Brent Begin

Haight Street residents may finally get a supermarket again. A plan to put a Whole Foods at Haight Street and Stanyan is in the works without the condos that threatened the development.

The lease is a 20-year deal and will need to go back to the Planning Department to obtain a conditional use permit, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

Whole Foods, an upscale supermarket, has run into opposition in The City before from neighborhood groups that are afraid the one-stop organic shop will run smaller businesses out of town.

A Whole Foods already took over a market space in Noe Valley, but residents of upper Market Street have been fighting Whole Foods and Trader Joes developments on Market Street.

Who is fighting grocery stores in all these neighborhoods? What 'local markets' are they trying to preserve? the one with $6 bread and $5 milk that expires in 48hrs? If the 'local' markets were really good, they wouldn't be competition with the chains. I can't justify double the grocery bill for half the quality.

The market on Haight is excellent, and defies the idea that little markets have to be expensive--and they have the best produce. That said, I'd love a Trader Joe's at Stanyan--I could buy pizza dough from them AND tomatoes from my local market. PS, Whole Foods' politics are far from SF's, given their CEO doesn't want gov,t. health care.
