ACORN wants another $6 million despite scandals

By: Kevin Mooney

An ACORN affiliate has just submitted applications for over $6 million in government funding, despite the controversial videos of the organization’s workers aiding a child prostitution “promoter.”

Employees with the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) in Washington D.C., Baltimore and Brooklyn told uncover investigators posing as a pimp and a prostitute how they could circumvent the law. ACORN has already fired four of the workers. But it claims the tapes have been “doctored” and “edited.”
A third video implicating the ACORN workers was released today. Meanwhile, the ACORN Institute, one of many ACORN affiliates, has applied for over $6 million in grant money for broadband projects. ACORN and its various affiliates have received at least $53 million in federal funds since 1994.
The Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service (RUS) have announced that they have received about 2,200 applications requesting nearly $28 billion in funding that applies to all 50 states and Washington D.C.
This funding included as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It has been set up to “help bridge the technological divide and create jobs building Internet infrastructure,” according to the NTIA.
ACORN Institute has filed two separate applications with the Commerce Department. One in the amount of $3,172,042 and the other in amount of $2,999,903.
The grant description reads as follows:
“The Digital Empowerment Project bridges the digital divide in low-income and minority populations by promoting adoption through grassroots outreach, training participants in computer centers; and providing in-home computers and broadband access. This approach is based on research-driven practices and ensures an efficient and scalable effort to facilitate broadband in disadvantaged populations.”
Former and current members of the organization now active with ACORN 8, a whistleblower group, have called for a federal investigation. Michael McCray, a spokesman for ACORN 8, told The Examiner that funding should be withheld until after there is a forensic audit.
As The Examiner has previously reported, ACORN remains eligible for over $8 billion in federal funding through stimulus money and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This has got to stop. Where are the Republicans???? Where are the Democrats who continue to allow this? Don't they know they have consigned their country to the far left???? This is my money - taxpayer money.

This program was put in place to expand infrastructure in places it didn't ALREADY exist not provide access or training to people.

I seriously doubt acorn plans to put wires in the ground or towers in the air with that money, instead it will go to "training" and "computers" and "access" meanwhile probably spending a fraction on the costs and pocketing the rest. Those three things are the easiest to falsify and mis-report.

These applications for grants are incorrect. The ACORN Institute is not based on Washington DC. Its headquarters are in New Orleans. Its Executive Director lives and works in New Orleans. Its own website says they are in New Orleans.

The applications should be rejected for filing false information.

Try to imagine if you will someone walking into a right leaning organization asking if they can get help enslaving some underage black girls. What page of the paper would that fall on? Would the major networks cover the story?
What we have today is someone walking into a left leaning organization (that our President once worked for) and asking for help with enslaving some underage girls from South America.
By not putting this on the front page the main stream media is telling us that it is fine to enslave as long as they are illegal’s from South America and the organization in question is left leaning and getting funds from a left leaning administration.
When did slavery become okay again?

There are so many investigations before this like Rove for instance and Cheney. Oh you should be so proud. After several attempts you finally got someone to give advice on getting a loan for a brothel. Just horrible. Voter fraud? Huh. Its voter registration fraud is what they are accused, not voter fraud like Ann Coulter is accused. Where the investigation? ACORN has long been a convenient boogey-man of the right-wingers – mainly, I’d wager, because it’s a powerful organization that works to empower people in impoverished areas, including: “Helping hundreds of thousands of African-American and Latino voters register to vote and get to the polls in recent years. In other words democrat votes.

And it was ACORN that got the vote out in Gary, Indiana. Except the number of Democratic votes exceeded the registered number.
Where is Jimmy Carter when you need him. If this were a 3rd world country - we would have been lambasted by our bitter little incompetent former president.

ps - voter registration fraud leads to voter fraud.

Where is our esteemed Attorney General Eric Holder on the latest of many, many charges against ACORN? Oh, except he won't even work on an indictment of 2 Black Panther thugs intimidating voters even though the video evidence was without question.
Racism? you bet...

ACORN - if there is not a RICO investigation, there should be a number of resignations immediately. And what do Rove and Cheney have to do with this. They usually got investigated for going after the bad guys.
By his silence, I guess Obama is ok with prostitution of teens? "Hey, guys gotta make a livin' in this economy"

[ACORN has long been a convenient boogey-man of the right-wingers – mainly, I’d wager, because it’s a powerful organization that works to empower people]

In 2008 Barack Obama for President had to correct its FEC reports to accurately account for the $800,000 it listed as paid to CSI or Citizens Services Inc. It was claimed that CSI had no relation to ACORN, yet it was ACORN spokespeople and ACORN's chief Organizer speaking on behalf of CSI in response to press inquiries.

Furthermore, the Acorn Chief Organizer is on the record supporting Barack Obama for President.

The theory behind the architectural design of the Internet by ARPA was that if one installation was attacked and put out of commission, the whole network would not be taken down with it.
Apparently, ACORN and its 350 affiliates have structured themselves in the same way.

Right Greg: “Helping hundreds of thousands of African-American and Latino voters register to vote and get to the polls in recent years. In other words democrat votes."

The only problem was that many of them were dead, were cartoon characters, etc. One day mind-numbed dopes like you might wake up and see what is really going on with that great Democrat party. Kinda doublt it though.

Jail time. Lots of it.
Follow the money, higher and higher, crawl through the refuse that is the Democratic party and weed out all the lawmakers involved. All contributions made to any lawmaker by ACORN and it’s associates should be refunded to the taxpayer. Take the money from the DNC.
Find and prosecute all the lawmakers involved and punish them.
Remove all payments to and government involvement with ACORN, and any associated group no matter what they call themselves.
Investigate the election results, analyze the vote count against the presence of ACORN. If the outcome shows massive fraud demand that we have another Presidential election in 2010.
I sense a shovel ready project erecting the prisons that will be needed for all the corrupt politicians.

Reid, Dodd, Pelosi, Rangel, Franks, Obama do you hear the footsteps? Are they getting louder? Are they keeping you awake?

There is no reason on earth, other than corruption and catering to special interest, that our tax dollars $$$$, billions of them, are going to ACORN, Planned Parenthood, NEA, PBS. We the people should not be funding any organization whether we like the organization or not. Reps and Dems are all alike: they use our $$$ as payback to groups that help them get elected. It is high time we put a stop to this. Cut taxes and we'll cut corruption! There just won't be any money to give out.

Where. I read the act. Show me where voter registration and voter fraud are one and the same. Although ACORN is nonpartisan, its registration efforts focus on low-income and minority populations who tend to vote for Democrats; critics contend those efforts frequently bend or break registration rules. And that's the problem in a nutshell or ACORN Shell.

Greg: Are you just ignorant and stupid or are you, like ACORN part of the 49% that live by living of the the treasury? Get a job and pay taxes so you can provide financial support to the international criminal activity known as ACORN. If you complete your GED you might be able to get a job clearing minefields in Iraq.

Reminds me again of the protesters at an event in Austin, TX the other day. Just took the vile rhetoric we've seen on display this August one extra step: "the protesters had Larry Kilgore, a “Christian activist” and candidate for governor who has endorsed executions for homosexuals;“I hate that flag up there,” Kilgore said “We hate the United States!"But this has increasingly become the Republican base. A group of people who feel completely justified in chanting "We hate the United States!" I got the message loud and clear at the tea party. I fear the next McVeigh like terrorist attach will be from within.

greg is either a talented troll or the most prejudiced, racist person here --- and by plenty.

I'm always fascinated by people who think they are holding the high ground, as they muster all the hatred they can find and toss out stereotype after stereotype.

Incidentally, if the purpose of ACORN is to "get Democratic votes", then the organization has no business receiving any federal funding. Funding should be coming from the DNC and other pro-Democratic Party sources.

For all their raving, racist rabble like greg actually prove the point that the left can't make a coherent argument for funding a scam-artist organization like acorn. Rather than offer anything pertinent, they're left to flail...spouting rediculous rants, rather than sticking to the question on the table. The article is asking if Federal funding should be made available to an organization like acorn. Now, the mission of acorn, given the recent video revelations, seems to be "how to get over" on the system. Like the next generation of a welfare family, that has been schooled in the art of exploiting holes in the bureaucracy, acorn's laughable attempt at legitimacy is just that. It's "Slip-n-Fall School" in a store front. Should it receive Federal dollars? Of course not, but that doesn't stop the a racist nut job like greg from grabbing the mic to declare that "Beyonce made the greatist video of all time"...or whatever is filling the gap between their ears at the moment.

One of the requirements for an audit is to determine the nature of the "mind set" of management toward pracitices that are not in compliance with standards of ethics or laws. Based on the released reports there is ample evidence that ALL funding should be haulted, an investigation from the federal level conducted and appropriate action taken toward person(s) not in compliance. The States should conduct any required investigations into local units for the same purpose. Then determine the role of funding. We destroyed a whole international accounting firm for action equal to this.

Last week, we saw some pretty disturbing activities revealed in the undercover footage from ACORN Housing’s Baltimore office. By any measure of conduct, the actions of ACORN’s employees should never have happened. It turns out the actions shouldn’t have happened for another, very simple, reason: ACORN can’t legally operate in the state of Maryland.

According to the following documents, ACORN, Inc.–the parent organization of all things ACORN–forfeited its corporate charter in Maryland in 2006. ACORN Housing forfeited its corporate charter in 2008. Any ACORN office in the state of Maryland is potentially operating illegally.

The Maryland Attorney General has made noise about prosecuting the intrepid journalists who undercovered the misdeeds of ACORN employees. Perhaps he should focus instead on how ACORN was able to operate without a license in his state.

You Can see the documents here:

I happen to be a Florida cracker even though I now live in Georgia. I do not hate blacks or hispanics. I resent your comments. I have attended tea parties and am not a radical who wants to overthrow the government through violence. I believe in our governmental election process, but do feel I have a right to speak out. I have never been a polictical activist, but have a problem with spending money we don't have, governmental waste and who holds most of our debt. I don't care whether it is Republicans, Democrats or Independents in office who are bringing this about. I will vote against them and support voting them out.
