Welcome to the major leagues, President Obama

Examiner Editorial
February 3, 2009

There are multiple lessons to be gleaned by President Barack Obama from the withdrawal Tuesday of former Sen. Tom Daschle as the White House nominee for secretary of the Health and Human Services Department. Here are four:

- What usually works in Chicago to quell ethics controversies doesn’t wash in the nation’s capital. You should think twice about advice you get in the future from your advisers, who thought your November aura was still sufficiently bright enough to get Daschle confirmed. They thought Daschle could just say he’s sorry he forgot to pay $128,000 in taxes owed for his use of a limo and personal chauffeur provided by a big-bucks Democratic donor and media baron, then waltz to the White House to fill the dual roles of your health reform czar and HHS head. This isn’t Chicago.

- Having made strong public defenses of two of your three major nominees with tax problems, you have become a defender of Washington’s business-as-usual culture and given up the opportunity to portray yourself as the man who was going to bring change to the Potomac. It was a huge mistake to condone conduct by your Treasury and HHS secretary nominees that would have ruined the reputation of most people. Most of us would have our wages garnished, our bank accounts emptied and liens filed on our homes by the Internal Revenue Service.

- The bigger and more pervasive government becomes, the more difficult it is to find qualified, talented people to serve in high positions who don’t have multiple conflicts of interest.

Washington is overrun with former senators, representatives, executive-branch appointees, career civil servants and congressional staffers who are getting rich peddling influence. Daschle was notable, but far from unique, in having used his “political savvy and influence” to earn more than $5 million in a mere four years, as noted by The New York Times.

The solution is less government — not ever-more-complicated ethics regulations — so that fewer influence seekers look to former Washington big shots such as Daschle.

- The federal tax code must be shorn of its bewildering complications, exemptions, deductions and credits so that every taxpayer can pay either with a flat tax return the size of a postcard or a reformed version of the present system. Surely, if the tax code is too confusing for the Treasury secretary and former Senate majority leader — to say nothing of House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel, who also has unpaid tax problems — it is past time to get out the chain saw.

I supported, voted and gave $ to Obama. I was wrong. Obama is a HYPPCRITE for letting Geithner be elected Treasury Secy.. Obama lied to us when he said he will change the culture in Washington. Simple. American peeople need to call him on this balatant abuse of power - all his hope garbage was just that - hope and garbage. What a disappointment. Bigger disappointment is lack of MEDIA OUTRAGE on Geithner !!

I am laughing my rear end off...Liberals actually believed a corrupt Chicago Politician would suddenly become the most ethical President. The most ethical President now has the most corrupt and unethical group of subordinates and advisers ever assembled. It will be a scandal a week, even if the press tries all it can to cover for the One.

Change we can believe in. Just when we started to believe...and we thought it could never get worse...it did. Geithner needs to go! At this point I don't think I could be any more disappointed than I am. Where is the Media Outrage? And the poor people in Kentucky. Where is the Pres? Eating expensive beef and hosting a super bowl party. Our poor country.

Well - this is what you voted for. How does it look now that the hype is begining to fade. Don't worry - the mainstream media will continue to cheer for him. Some of us tried to tell you that he was a fraud......but we failed to convince you.....

Obama didn't lie when he said he would bring change to Washington, he just meant he would be bringing Chicago style politics to town. Fortunately most of the media is in the tank for him. I'm sure Chrissy Matthews still has that tingle running up his leg.

Where is the outrage, you inquire? Honestly, do you not realize the media adores The Annointed One? They don't want to report anything bad about this guy. The adoring media coverage during the election got him 2-3 points I bet.

Wow...the writer gets it...and from the SF Chron no less. Obama is a bright guy, and will perhaps learn from these disasters out of the starting gate. But if not, then in his memory, the finest day in office may well be limited to the date of inuguration.

If it wasn't so predictable I'd be laughing my what ever off. Our Dear Leader can't find any clean Dems' to put in his Cabinet, so he has to use members of the GOP, that fellow "progressives" say's it all.

Used to live in SF when it was "New Year's Eve Every Night" (yes, that long ago). It was the Paris of America. Now Paris isn't even Paris. Shows how time screws with everything. Mr. Obama is an attractive man with a wide range of gifts. If those of you who voted for him had been paying attention and/or sought alternative media sources than propaganda media, you wouldn't feel so betrayed.

Its actually a good thing that Obama has a revolving door of failures for his Cabinet positions. With all the back taxes that are being collected from these Dems it won't be neccessary for Obama to raise taxes or have the US Treas borrow the money to pay for the pork barrel bailout.

Mr. Blago. Don't forget the "special" loans for C. Dodd, and B.Frank from the Peoples Bank, Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac. How about the millions of $ former President Clinton has raised for his personal use from other countries while his "wife" is now our Secy of State and has to deal with them. Could go on but I hope all who read this are stuck with the fact of how CORRUPT the Democratic Party has become. Change you can believe in?

Now that you know he's not the "Messiah" everyone made him out to be, how bout someone make him show his birth certificate?

We knew this was coming. A cursory look at Obama's entire life reveals that he lacks the ability to judge the character and integrity of his associates. I mean honestly did anybody expect someone who would consider Jeremiah Wright a "spiritual advisor" and thought nothing of funneling funds for a organization directed by William Ayers to be someone to trust with questions of character and competence. Are any of the Obam-phants now beginning to realize why the non-droolers were always wondering why all of Obama's associates were so ugly? This is the result of not getting an adequate answer!

The press got more than 2-3% for Obama.Someone from Newsweek said that the MSM would get at least 15% for the loser Kerry.I think that this is more accurate. I take no pleasure in the mess that is the Obama Admin. He never showed leadership except in being able to win elections by throwing friends overboard and using underhanded means .That is his strong suit. And the sheep were blind.Integrity does matter but not to sheep.

LogicalUS

Feb 4, 2009

"look at all the vultures celebrating in the second week " It is not celebrating. This was expected and pointed out repeatedly by conservatives and Republicans during election but you, of course, wrote it off as "right-wing attacks" because of the MSM adorers constantly droning on about the cool candidate. So don't try to alleviate your worries of your choice by attacking the messengers again. YOU think it is going to get better? This is the easy part and the man with no qualifications or executive experience blew it as you should have known he would. It is going to get worse, but you voted for him and you own him. Sorry.

Good article! This is what happens when you elect a totally unqualified candidate for POTUS - he nominates people who've 'been there' to fill in the void left by his inexperience, and you get the usual batch of unpunished, Washington crooks. I would feel so much better about the future if Mitt Romney had been elected - at least he's familiar with business. BO has never even run a lemonade stand!

Hear anything from the Media. It seems like EVERYBODY he Nominates to a position in his Administration, has a TAX PAYING PROBLEM. Did I miss all the jokes on the late night shows? And I must have missed all the FEDERAL HELP that Kentucky's been recieving after the WORST ICE STORM they've ever had. Has he even been ASKED A QUESTION about this? This guy is that car you bought, without test driving it first. A real clunker. And it's just getting started.

Many bashed Gov Palin about her lack of experience. Yet, even limited, she had 10 times the experience of Obama. Many were told that Obama was an empty suit with no experience. But no, the Liberals swallowed the Koolade liberally dispensed by the Mainstream Media. IMHO the Mainstream Media is to America what child molesters are to children. We've all been shafted. There was no one less qualified than Shrub when he backed into the White House in 2001. But it is not in the interest of our "leaders" to simplify the tax code or any other part of our Federal Government. If it was we wouldn't come back every year to revisit the AMT, because it would either be removed as the pile of junk that it is or it would be partially redeemed by indexing it to the CPI so that it doesn't continue its death spiral into the ground.

Chicago mobstrers in the Roaring 20's/prohibiotn era...were noble ane honest compared to the crooks...liars...and mental :cow flops" in Washington...How long are we as Americans going to stand for all this? It's time to get rid of the best "congress money can buy" and the other polititcians who are "bought' by the BigPharma...By the way, why is the FDA so lazy, on the take and ..well...so stupid? They must be in training to run for Congress..Anyway..the 1920'30's Chicago Mob was at least honest...an ethic..a code...besides when they were going to kill you they either told you they were going to kill you...or kill you fast...AND DON'T FORGET THEY ALWAYS SENT THE BIGGEST AND BEST FLOWERS TO YOUR FUNERAL...AHHH THOSE WERE THE DAYS...

Obama is a "wolf in sheep's clothing" and he hoodwinked millions with his ability to manipulate "words" (just like cult leaders) How about proper vetting of Mr. Obama, oh but the media fell "in love with the chrisma" and no one really did their homework like they should have so now we have this wolf in sheeps clothing, sadly, and the "Republic of the U.S. of A" is being challenged for survival. I really thought Obama would make things right in washington. I really believed every word he said about the change our nation believes in. What can I say, I am sick of the Republicans and could not wait for the Obama Administration to do what's right. Despite all of this non-sense, I still believe in Obama. Wake up people, Obama is under attack. He's a good man who is being attacked by the radical right. The reason the media won't cover this is because the evil right has their finger prints all over this and the MSM won't bite. Daschle is a good man and so is Geithner. These are honest men.. men with integrity and deserve our trust to be cabinet members in Obama's administration. They are both being attacked by the usual right-wing Bush lovers. Dear President Obama: you are still my president and no matter what surfaces you are a good man and nothing will take me away from absolute loyalty to you. I will do anything to serve my president. If it is accurate they did not pay their fair share of taxes is it not remarkably odd that the President could not find people to nominate who were current in their taxes??

I am taken aback by the misinformation in this analysis. President Obama has selected outstanding people for his cabinet. It is his nominees and his veters who are at fault, not Obama. It is the veters responsibility to review the background of the nominee to etermine if there is anything that would disqualify the candidate. The nominee is responsible to advise the President of any discrepancies in their backgrounds that would disqualify them for their nomination. The SFE knows this but has bought into the illogic right wing racist hate speech of Sean Hannity and Rush L. Rejection of nominees occurs under every administration. Bush had several candidates that did not qualify, some had to withdraw. Same for Bush SR., Reagan, Carter, and Clinton. But for some reason, we are now going to single out BHO for criticism. Shame on the SFE for falling into this rieght wing trap.

Let me clarify that while I don't enjoy listening to Sloan or Cunningham, neither are "racist". They, for the most part, are sensationalists who stir up controversy for ratings. Throwing around comments like "KKK" and "racist" so effortlessly is wrong and speaks volumes of your lack of education. These are unfortunate events. Certainly not unexpected though, considering the complete lack of qualifications in this man. The MSM and the Left was so fixated on whether America was 'ready to elect a black man' that the question "Is this particular black man a suitable candidate for President?" was never considered. Those "Islamic" radicals smell weakness more keenly than any animal and they capitalize on it more brutally. It's tempting to find consolation in all of this hypocrisy and ineptitude, but there can be none in the aftermath of another date our enemies find ironically meaningful (remember why they struck on 9/11?). None of the - what was it? - 46 percent of us who voted the other way had to crack our books on ESP to know why the enemy wanted The One to win.

Ah, well, we don't have to put up with this klutz, there's always impeachment............

He is in waaaaay over his head. This guy should have gone to Hollywood and joined the perverted puking actors bunch. Acting is the only thing for which he is actually talented. Can you believe that we have a president who farms out he stimulus package to Pelosi who in turn gives all of her friends the "hook up" while he does his TV/PR tour? Then he attempts to appoint proponents of raised taxes to people who themselves do not pay their taxes? Hypocrites! He is truly an impostor!!

Obama is not a fool; he did the biggest bait and switch known in history, he is from Kenya after all. Yes change yes, will you - of' course I will If you voted for Obama you are a sucker, even Obama thinks your a sucker. You cirucus freaks will do anything when someone throws peanut shells at you. I give him my props. On with the bartucada! The only safe place for the American people is in the South, that is South America my friends. Which list are you on? FEMA FTW. Rinse and repeat, that is the Obama way.

What disaster (manmade) is going to happen so that our Clark Kent can hop out of the phone booth? A 'situation' was predicted. Could he have enough slickness to manufacture, assess and correct it thereby saving the 'American Way'

I am confounded how anyone could not have seen this coming. No experience in running anything except a campaign, no real ides only slogans. I am scared that so many people can be led to vote on such little substance. McCain was not my ideal candidate; however he had been tested like no other candidate in recent history. He was someone who, at the very least, would have been able to think through his decisions. Change has come…

It doesn't matter. The federal reserve in cahoots with the previous treasury secretary has performed a coup d'etat on the American taxpayer.Congress has been acquiescent or bamboozled. There is no chance for resolution of this mess. There is no hope for a resolution of this mess.

Conservative voices TRIED (and failed) to tell you about Obama and what he truly stands for. Unfortunately, the warnings fell on deaf ears. Now, the country is getting just a glimpse of the next 4 years of an Obama administration. When will the messianic fascination end?

I am rotfl after reading Michelle's comment, which I can only hope is a joke. Geithner and Daschle are NOT honest men with integrity. They LIED about their TAXES and CHOSE not to PAY them. Geithner only paid after he got caught and Daschle still hasn't paid them. Go look up the definition of integrity and honesty please. Obama isn't "under attack" from right wingers. He's opened himself up to criticism from every one. Stop drinking the kool aid and try to actually read about what is really going on for a change.

Wow, My hats off to your editorial!! This was on one of my favorite conservative sites as a must-read for the day. I couldn't agree with you more.. I hope some of the vast majority of the Frisco(sorry, couldn't help myself) libs will some day get it that Obama will never walk on water. While we're at it California, let's get rid of the people really hurting you-Boxer, Feinstein, Solis, and Pelosi-what idiots!!!!

With all the tzx problems of nominees I think it would be wise to check the taxes of all members of congress. We probbly don't need to have a bail out plan. They probbly owe more then we need in the bail out

An Op-Ed piece out of a San Francisco (beautiful city, btw) paper that is calling for a smaller, less invasive government, a flat tax or simpler tax code and a reduction of Pull Peddling in Washington D.C.!!!? WTF! You must not have gotten the memo that SF is ridiculously left-wing, verging on socialistic! Personally, I like Obama and his current tactics. It takes a brave and self-assured man to tell the constituency that voted for him, "I am Obama. I used you in order to place myself in the ultimate position of American power and now I'm through with you. I will do whatever I want, whenever I want and to whomever I want, regardless of what you sheep have to think. That is why you are the sheep and I am the shepherd." More power to BHO! I like this guy! Long live Adam and Milton. Free markets, free men.

Feb 5, 2009

While the article certainly took BHO to task for the usual Chicago \ Wash.DC BS, it ended with a call for a flat tax which is really the main point of the editorial writer. Just doing their masters business! End the Fed and the IRS, as they were both put into place under false pretenses, and are illegal under the U.S. Constitution.

The "it was just a mistake" excuse is getting so old. Every nominee just made a mistake? I wonder how far I would get with the IRS to use an excuse like I made a mistake if I cheated on my taxes. Obama is part of the corrupt Washington machine, and what's worse is that he cut his teeth in the EVEN MORE CORRUPT Chicago machine. This is all so typical. Is this the change we all wanted? I think not.

I am amazed at this artical and the comments made here. After 8 years of incompetency we have people that are condeming some one who has been in office a month? If all you know how to run this country why did you not inspire to be president. Second guessing is a sure way to show your lack of intellect. I'm not sure all the things that are being done presently are correct but I admit I do not know how to bring this country out of the Bush calamity. Give this man a chance to be a good president or fail but give him a chance. For some, no matter how he preforms, you will see it as a failure and that is sad.

I did not vote for Obama but I was praying that he could maybe make things better in our economy, but you look at his cabinet and this is Clinton revived? Daschle for Health, Why? I am a nurse he was a terrible choice. One of the best choices is Hillary saying this as a Republican? She proved herself in the debates and maybe should have been President? This whole billion dollar plan is wrong and do not shove this in our faces? Address what caused this whole debacle the housing industry and the stupid greedy CEOs who are still running these companies WHY?

We need more people in government like Harry Truman, but more importantly we need term limits. Our Founding Fathers never intended our congressmen and senators to make a career out of Congress.

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!!! Keep on dreaming everyone. It's time to wake up and realize Obama was elected by the masses that believed he was going to pay their house note, car note and buy their gas. By the time the democrats are finished we'll be lucky if we can afford lunch. You know SPREAD THE WEALTH!! Enjoy the CHANGE!!

Obama is not a leader all flash no substance but the rebus really are not any better. The bottom line is the culture of Washington needs to change Obama was right about that. We need people with no connection to DC Get rid of the lawyers they obviously can't Govern go back and do what your good at. Think about it the when do you retain lawyers to keep out of trouble they are masters of manipulation most are good people just terrible leaders and managers.

It appears that Rebulbicans want lower taxes and Democrats simply choose to ignore taxes. The for sale sign is in front of a lot of houses across the country because of the screw ups in Washington. Yeah, talks so eloquently and so much charisma. Maybe that's good for the media and the entertainment industry, but I say no more Obama-drama or America and the future of my children will experience Obama-trauma. He's a big LIAR and he hasn't fooled me. I want to deal with the truth, what's right, not what feels good or sounds good or looks good. He's got the young people. My husband asked his 19-year-old sister why she voted for him and she said because she thought he was good as if he was a song or purse, nothing about any issues he supports. The only thing to be proud of is that he's the 1st black American president and that's it. That's as much HOPE as this one goes.
