WHO: Unknown dognapper
WHAT: A 3-month-old golden brindle Chihuahua with white markings was stolen Friday from an animal shelter in The City. Two men were captured on surveillance cameras entering the locked area where the dog was kept, but shelter officials are still trying to figure out how they gained access.
WHY IT HAPPENED: Tiny dogs such as the Chihuahua pup can go for $300 to $500 on Craigslist.org, according to shelter officials.
WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: The dog was available for adoption the day after it was kidnapped, and would have been offered to a properly screened new home for about $107. Officials now fear it could face cruelty or improper care at the hands of its kidnappers or new owners.
WHAT’S BEING DONE ABOUT IT: Anyone with any information about the incident should call Animal Care and Control’s emergency hot line at (415) 554-9000.
