Letters from our Readers: Let law enforcement do its intended job

As soon as the Board of Supervisors votes to prohibit the reporting of illegal immigrant youth felons to ICE, Mayor Gavin Newsom should announce that the reporting will continue as before and that he will not condone firing or disciplining any public safety officer for complying with federal law.
Certainly any public safety officer disciplined for reporting an illegal alien to immigration authorities would have grounds for a civil suit against The City that could lead to the sanctuary ordinance being struck down. This represents an opportunity for the mayor to demonstrate that, unlike the majority of supervisors, he takes seriously the safety of all San Franciscans from violent gangs like MS-13, which exploits the well-intentioned local sanctuary policy.

Time for Obama sit-down
I propose that we generate a lobby of letters, e-mails, phone calls and Web page messages to the White House requesting a meeting with President Barack Obama when he visits San Francisco on Oct. 15, to discuss the life-threatening health and environmental safety issues at the Hunters Point Shipyard federal superfund site.

Where’s the outrage?
Isn’t it amusing that Donald Fisher was unable to donate a new museum with his priceless art collection to the Presidio due to the diligence of a handful of so-called preservationists, yet no one batted an eyelash at the opening of a Disney museum featuring cartoon characters? Am I missing something here?

Keep president’s proposal
Approximately 40,000 citizens die each year as a result of not having health insurance. Are we our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers? I think not, if we allow them to die.
What a sad commentary. Please don’t let them water down the president’s health care program.

Praise for the mayor
Mayor Gavin Newsom should be congratulated for revealing the city attorney’s memo on the illegality of Supervisor David Campos’ sanctuary city legislation to the citizens of San Francisco, rather than being taken to task by Supervisor Chris Daly of District Fairfield. The mayor and Board of Supervisors should not knowingly subject The City to lawsuits when City Attorney Dennis Herrera has warned them that they will be on the losing side.
