WHERE: The D train in New York City

WHAT: Violence erupted on an NYC subway train during the morning commute this week, after two women started arguing about one’s refusal to cover her mouth while coughing. A southbound D train pulled into a 42nd Street station and the coughing woman spit on the other one, provoking a punch. Then, the cougher attempted to flee the train as the doors opened, but the second woman grabbed her by the back of the hair, violently yanking her down to the floor. The fracas ended when passengers pulled the women apart and the cougher managed to get off the train.

WHY: Subway riders are particularly on edge after a rough spring that saw as many as 20 to 40 percent of New Yorkers exposed to swine flu.
