An idea that should have gone down in flames

SAN FRANCISCODim Bulb: California passed a law 30 years ago requiring furniture and bedding sold here to withstand 12 seconds of contact with an open flame without catching fire. A new study, however, shows that Californians have twice the amount of flame-retardant chemicals in their bloodstream as those elsewhere in the country. The chemicals, known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, have been shown in animals to cause thyroid hormone disruption and to interfere with developing reproductive and nervous systems
