Daily Outrage: Berlin barkeeper guilty in fatal drinking match with teen

Examiner Editorial
July 3, 2009

WHO: Aytac Guzelarslan

WHAT: Sixteen-year-old Lukas Wels died after being served more than 45 shots of tequila during a 2007 drinking contest with barkeeper Guzelarslan — who cheated by filling his own glass mostly with water.

WHAT’S BEING DONE:
A German court sentenced the barman to three years and five months in prison for committing bodily harm with fatal consequences. Guzelarslan apologized to Wels’ family before the trial.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: The authorities said they were making an example of the barkeeper because of Germany’s troubling increase in teenage binge drinking during recent years, with more teenagers
hospitalized for alcohol poisoning.
