The most recent activity around The City’s increasing trend of forming improvement districts occurred Tuesday when Supervisor John Avalos introduced legislation to kick off the process for forming one for Ocean Avenue.

Currently there are 10 locations in The City — including Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf and the Fillmore district — where businesses or property owners have voted to pay an annual fee to pay for things like frequent graffiti removal, flower baskets and security personnel.

The Ocean Avenue Community Benefits District is not expected to be the last district to form. The Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development is helping with the formation of even more in the Excelsior, West Portal and Civic Center areas, and the eastern neighborhoods. The City offers a grant to help with the upfront costs.

The Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee meets Wednesday at 11 a.m. at City Hall in Room 250 to vote on the legislation.
