Oakland Athletics: A’s make roster moves in wake of Santiago Casilla’s arm injury

In the wake of an arm injury to reliever Santiago Casilla, the Oakland A’s have recalled right-handed pitchers Chris Bassitt and Carlos Ramirez from Triple-A Nashville, placed Casilla on the disabled list and optioned right-hander Josh Lucas to Triple-A.

Casilla — who felt shoulder pain during his brief eighth-inning outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night — had been having issues with his right shoulder as of late, before not being able to go more than 11 pitches on Friday.

Formerly known as Jairo Garcia, Casilla finally got his green card this year, and had been pitching well for Bob Melvin and the A’s. He has a save and a 3.32 ERA in 16 relief appearances with Oakland, and has held the opposition to a .153 batting average, sixth lowest among American League relievers. He has, however, walked 14 batters, which is tied for third most.  This is Casilla’s sixth career stint on the disabled list but his first since 2014.

Lucas started the A’s bullpen game on Thursday, going two innings, and allowing three hits, three walks and two runs in a 4-3 Oakland win. With the A’s this season, Lucas had three appearances, allowing three earned runs in 8 2/3innings of work, striking out eight. The 27-year old righty returns to Nashville where he had allowed three earned runs in 10 2/3 innings across nine appearances.

Bassitt re-joins the A’s for the a second stint in the majors this season, but has yet to make an appearance. He was recalled on April 20, but optioned back to Nashville on April 26. The 29-year-old right-hander had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on May 6, 2016, and has not pitched in the majors since April 28, 2016, when he went 3 2/3 innings in start against Detroit, taking the loss after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits and three walks.

So far this season in Triple-A, Bassitt is 2-2 with a 6.35 ERA and .316 opponents batting average in eight games, including five starts.  He posted a 0.69 ERA in three relief appearances for the Sounds before his first promotion to Oakland, but is 1-2 with an 11.15 ERA in five starts since.

Ramirez, who was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on May 20, began the year at Triple-A Buffalo, where he went 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA, a .074 opponents batting average, and eight walks in 8 1/3 innings, over seven relief appearances.

Ramirez made two appearances for the Blue Jays this season, with a 3.86 ERA, a .125 opponents batting average and five walks in 2 1/3 innings. The 27-year old was designated for assignment on May 13, claimed off waivers by Oakland and then optioned to Nashville on May 20.  He pitched in one game for the Sounds on May 24 against Colorado Springs, striking out three over two innings. Ramirez is 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA and .113 opponents batting average in 14 appearances over two seasons in the majors.
