Oakland Athletics: Daniel Mengden to DL, A’s call up Chris Bassitt

The Oakland Athletics have recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt from Triple-A Nashville, placing right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden on the 10-day disabled list due to a sprained right foot, retroactive to Sunday, when he was pulled in the third inning against the Chicago White Sox.

This is Bassitt’s fifth call-up this season. He didn’t pitch during his first two stints, and made one start during his one-day third stint on June 9. He then made two starts during his latest call-up from June 14 to 22.

Though Bassitt has a 3.86 during his time in the Majors this season, he’s had a rough time in Triple-A, going 2-3 with a 6.10 ERA in 10 games, including seven starts. He’s not pitched for Nashville, though, since June 2.

Mengden has had an up-and-down season. He went 2-3 in April with a 4.68 ERA, but then ran off four straight wins in May, with a 1.51 ERA in six starts. June hasn’t been so kind. Mengden has gone 0-2 with an 11.57 ERA in four starts.

Mengden is one of seven starting pitchers this season to spend time on the A’s disabled list, including projected starter Jharel Cotton (Tommy John surgery). Top prospect A.J. Puk, who didn’t spend any time at the Major League level this season but would likely have joined the rotation by now, has also gone under the knife, undergoing Tommy John surgery in late March.
