Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes seemed to be one of Hollywood’s golden couples, with seven years of marriage under their belts and nary a peep of scandal. So when their lawyers announced Monday in a statement that they had “separated earlier this year,” we were pretty surprised.
The statement maintained that “the split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children.” So ... what went wrong?
Although the couple have each won Oscars, their romantic relationship wasn’t as successful as their professional one, according to a Star magazine insider. The pair had apparently been living separate lives for some time, maintaining two separate apartments in nearby NYC neighborhoods.
“Their relationship has really collapsed, but they remain very close friends,” the source said. “Kate says the passion has left;
she loves Sam, but only as a friend. He was content to stay in all the time; she loves to seize the day. They’re just two ships in the night these days.”
Insert iceberg joke here.
Here are some words we never expected to read, for a number of reasons: Spencer Pratt is leaving “The Hills.” To fight the “cyber threat” facing America. Um, what?
The mouthy reality TV star announced he has “decided to take a break from my obligations to MTV’s ‘The Hills’ and discontinue filming any more episodes for this current season.”
His “new passion,” Spencer said, is “to do my part in maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent emerging technologies from threatening our nation’s security.” He added that he “would not be honoring my country or myself if I were to continue [on ‘The Hills’] when I have the opportunity and the ability to assist our nation against these prevalent threats.”
Spencer Pratt, voluntarily removing himself from the spotlight and cameras? Sounds like he’s been the victim of a real-life identity theft. Or maybe there’s another story?
According to Us magazine, he actually was threatened with getting the boot from the MTV hit after freaking out and yelling at a female producer (“I should kill you for even asking me to do that!”). Allegedly, he was told that if he completes a six-week anger-management course, “he can return to the show,” according to an insider.
So ... which version do you believe? Yep, us too.
Miley Cyrus has admitted she’s dating Liam Hemsworth, her co-star in the upcoming “The Last Song.” But the 17-year-old said she had some competition for the Aussie actor’s affections — kind of.
“I don’t know who had a bigger crush on him at the beginning, my mom or me,” the “Hannah Montana” star said on “Entertainment Tonight.”
“I was like, ‘No, maybe he’s just too pretty. I don’t want to be with someone who’s better looking than me,’” Miley said. “That’s, like, awkward.”
But mom Tish — who, for the record, is happily married to Miley’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus — “was like, ‘No, he is cute — he is!’” Miley said.
OK, we’re not even going to comment on this one. It’s just too creepy.
