SF Weekly purchased by parent company of San Francisco Examiner

SF Weekly
SF Weekly has been purchased by the parent company of the San Francisco Examiner.

The owner of the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Bay Guardian is acquiring the SF Weekly in a sale designed to preserve and enhance the paper’s role in The City’s media ecosystem.

San Francisco Newspaper Co., the Weekly’s new owner, pledged to continue operating the venerable alternative newsweekly as a standalone publication with separate editorial content from the both the Examiner and the Guardian.

“The Weekly occupies a distinctive niche in San Francisco, and we’re determined to strengthen its position,” said Todd Vogt, president and co-owner of the San Francisco Newspaper Co. “They already put out a high-quality paper, and we’re going to make it even better.”

The acquisition of the SF Weekly from Voice Media Group is effective as of today. The newspaper will eventually move from its current location near Pier 33 into the home of its new parent company, at 225 Bush St. The paper will be printed at the Examiner’s Bayview printing facility.

Financial terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
