U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan region at 842

As of Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at least 842 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Monday at 10 a.m. EST.
Of those, the military reports 650 were killed by hostile action.
Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 72 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, five were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.
There were also four CIA officer deaths and two military civilian deaths.

The latest deaths reported by the military:
_ One soldier died Monday in a bombing in eastern Afghanistan.
_ Two soldiers died Sunday in a bombing in southern Afghanistan.

The latest identifications reported by the military:
_ Marine Lance Cpl. Nicholas J. Hand, 20, Kansas City; died Sunday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
_ Two Army soldiers died Thursday in Zabul province, Afghanistan, after a suicide car bomber attacked their unit. Both were assigned to the 782d Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
Killed were Staff Sgt. John J. Cleaver, 36, Marysville, Wash.; and Sgt. Daniel A. Frazier, 25, Saint Joseph, Mich.
