MTT announces retirement from SF Symphony

On Tuesday, San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas announced that he’ll step down from the post in June 2020, after the 2019–20 season, which will mark his 75th birthday and his 25th year leading the world-class band.

In a press statement, he said, that, having conducted orchestras for most of his adult life, “I feel this is an appropriate moment to set aside some of my administrative responsibilities and begin a new period of creative possibilities.”

With a new title, music director laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, he’ll still be associated with the organization.

San Francisco Symphony President Sakurako Fisher said, “We look forward to continuing to support his vision, ideas, and innovation around what an orchestra can mean to its community.”

The maestro is known for his recordings of core masterworks by composers including Mahler, Beethoven and Schumann and for championing American composers such as Charles Ives, John Cage, Henry Cowell, Aaron Copland and Lou Harrison.
