San Francisco party-rocking DJ Motion Potion is getting set to warm up the most diehard of the Outside Lands Music and Art Festival's 100,000-plus fans Friday afternoon in the Heineken Dome.
The longtime Bay Area DJ and founder of Silent Frisco — who spins bootleg rock, funk and indie remixes — lives by the motto “Sleep is for quitters.”
Since getting his start in The City in the 1990s, he has played dozens of major festivals and throws regular parties in the Bay Area as the head of Sunset Promotions. He also arranged the lineup for Outside Lands' dance music-themed dome.
The dance space at the massive Golden Gate Park fest will feature the likes of DJ Sam Spiegel from NASA and Balkan Beat Box's DJ Shotnez. It's always a great spot to visit during the three-day event.
“On a cold day, everyone's there to get warm. On a hot day, everyone's there to cool off,” he says. “We have such cutting-edge sound and video production you can go in there and just lose track of time.”
All dome DJs get at least 90-minute sets — as opposed to the usual one-hour festival length — and headliners get two-hour slots in the Dome.
“The dome gives us more freedom,” he says,
Motion Potion is prepping a Beatles- and Red Hot Chili Peppers-inspired funky, rocking set for 2 p.m. He will share the back half of his set with the All Good Funk Alliance.
“We have no plans. I'm essentially going into the ring with Muhammad Ali. Rusty and Frank are no joke.”
The DJ enjoys warming crowds up in the early shift. “I really enjoy taking people from down-tempo to up-tempo. I really like being the guy who kicks things off in a certain way.”
Outside Lands is San Francisco's only mega-festival within city limits, and it takes a lot of guts and a fundamental love of music to make it happen, he says. Promoters Another Planet Entertainment and Superfly run a gauntlet of multiple city agencies, neighborhood groups and political organizations to make the event happen.
“This really is the due-diligence festival,” he says. “I would challenge any naysayer to come walk around with me and see what I see. This thing is done as well as it can possibly be done.”
