Montgomery Street Fast Pass center shutting down in March

Muni riders who buy their Fast Pass cards at the Montgomery Street Station will have to look for a new spot to buy their transit fare.

Starting in March, the Fast Pass service center at Montgomery Street will cease to exist — a cost-saving measure the Municipal Transportation Agency is moving forward with to help eat into a $16.9 million mid-year deficit.

Passengers who normally pick up their Fast Passes at Montgomery Street can walk a few blocks down to the Embarcadero Street Station or visit a local Walgreens to get the monthly fare, MTA executive director Nat Ford said at the agency’s board meeting on Tuesday.

While the MTA has to pay a transaction fee to establishments like Walgreens to sell the passes, the agency will save more money by not staffing the center at Montgomery Street, Ford said.
