Mirkarimi pushes farmers' markets plan

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi is making it easier for farmers’ markets to open up for business on land under the jurisdiction of the Recreation and Park Department.

His legislation to lower the cost of farmers' market permits was approved Wednesday by the Board of Supervisors' Budget and Finance Committee. It now requires approval by the full board.

The legislation comes as the department is working with the Haight-Ashbury Improvement Association to bring a farmers’ market on the closed portion of Waller Street in Golden Gate Park. The department has not had applications from farmers’ markets to operate on Rec and Park land because the existing fee structure was too prohibitive.

“We want to make as many neighborhoods throughout The City as friendly and as enabled to bring in farmers' markets,” Mirkarimi said. “We have seen how farmers’ markets have enriched many neighborhoods.”
