The father of San Francisco mayoral candidate Mark Leno died early Friday morning in Florida due to health complications related to his age. Manny Leno was 97.
News of his father’s deteriorating health prompted Mark Leno to leave the campaign trail earlier this week to be with his family in Boca Raton, Fla. Leno and his two siblings were raised by their father in Milwaukee, Wis. Their mother, Esther, passed away previously.
Following his father’s funeral, Leno is expected to return to San Francisco on Tuesday where he will resume his campaign for mayor in the June election. The former state assembly member and state senator is running against candidates that include Board of Supervisors President London Breed, Supervisor Jane Kim and former supervisor Angela Alioto, among others.
According to Leno’s campaign spokesperson, Zoë Kleinfeld, Leno’s campaign “has not ceased in his absence.”
“We have grown stronger to rally behind his amazing commitment to his family,” said Kleinfeld, adding that Leno “is doing exactly what anyone would expect him to do, which is to maintain his familial commitments.”
