The dilapidating timber docks of the Marina Yacht Harbor west are finally ready for their reconstruction. Rec and Park commissioners agreed to request that construction companies start making their proposals and to also make some changes to the redesign. For instance instead of using rocks to build a breakwater, they’ll use floating concrete slabs.
It was a decision that engineers said was more cost-efficient but some people for aesthetic and disclosure reasons opposed them during public comment at Rec and Park’s regular meeting. However commissioners voted unanimously to change the design plans and to start asking for bids. The 20-month construction could start as early as May.
It’s costing about $25 million, paid for by a loan from the state Department of Boating Waterways that is supposed to mostly repay itself with increased berthing fees after the renovation.Rec and Park also paid $15,000 for a company to do the outreach and this http://www.sfmarina-renovate.org/ Web work the past few months.
The east harbor is also on its way to recovery from contaminated, built-up silt.
