Man shot and killed with AK-47 assault rifle identified

The man shot dead in the Bayview with an AK-47 assault rifle this weekend has been identified by the medical examiner as 53-year-old James Collins.

Collins, a San Francisco resident, was on Newhall Street between La Salle Avenue and Third Street around 10:40 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by gunfire. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital but later pronounced dead, Officer Albie Esparza said.

Police responded to reports of multiple shots fired in the area from several emergency calls and a ShotSpotter activation, which is a device that notifies police when gunfire is detected.

Witnesses told police a newer white sports utility vehicle with two men inside — one in dark clothing and another wearing a white beanie and sweatshirt — sped away from the shooting.

No further suspect descriptions are available.

Sunday’s homicide marks the 23rd of the year. The last homicides in The City occurred a day apart, when a man was stabbed to death May 30 near Civic Center Plaza and another man was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head May 31 in McLaren Park.
