A 26-year-old man was pushed down the stairs of a downtown BART station and then stabbed early Thursday morning, according to police.

The attack happened at about 4 a.m. near the intersection of Market and Eighth streets after the suspect, a man in his late 40s or 50s, blocked the victim on the Civic Center BART station stairs.

The suspect then pushed the man down the stairs and chased him to the bottom before attacking again with a knife.

He then ran away and police have yet to make an arrest.

The victim is in stable condition after being taken to a nearby hospital.
