Man injured while scaling cliff to Baker Beach rescued by helicopter

A 29-year-old man who injured his ankle climbing down a cliff to a fishing site was rescued by Coast Guard helicopter Saturday evening, according to the National Park Service.

The man, a Lathrop resident, was climbing down a cliff to an otherwise-inaccessible part of Baker Beach at around 6:30 p.m. to go fishing when he turned his ankle, said Capt. Dave Raffo of the Presidio Fire Department. The man feared being trapped by a rising tide since he could not climb back up the cliff, Raffo said.

A 14-year-old relative of the man called the San Francisco Fire Department, National Parks Service spokeswoman Chris Powell and SFFD Asst. Chief Jim Barden said after checking the dispatch log. The 14-year-old was not in need of rescue, as previously reported in other media.

“The [adult] fellow had a severely strained, possibly broken left ankle,” Barden said.

Presidio Fire Department Capt. Tony Mesa called in the Coast Guard, who sent out their boat and helicopter, Raffo said. The helicopter airlifted the man to the field at Fort Scott, from which he was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center.
