Man convicted of fiscal elder abuse

A man accused of felony fiscal elder abuse and filing false documents in a case involving an 80-year-old victim he was supposed to help find placement in a board and care facility was found guilty Tuesday afternoon, according to San Mateo County prosecutors.

Muath Zghoul, 35, was arrested after the 80-year-old victim was admitted to a hospital on April 7, 2016.
The victim had stage-3 lymphoma and was undergoing chemotherapy. A nurse allegedly found him laying in his own feces and urine, according to prosecutors.

Investigators alleged that in April 2016, Zghoul tricked the victim into signing over the deed to his home. He had also tricked the victim into signing power of attorney documents giving Zghoul control over his finances.
The 80-year-old man thought the paperwork he was signing would simply consolidate his assets.

The defendant claimed to have given the victim a check for $150,000, but the victim denied ever receiving that money. He died last month.

Zghoul returns to court for sentencing June 29. He is out of custody on $360,000 bail, prosecutors said.

Defense attorney Robert Cummings did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.
