Man, 60, leads police on S.F., Highway 101 chase

A 60-year-old man led San Francisco police on a 30-minute high-speed chase through San Francisco and onto U.S. Highway 101 — hitting a police officer and a patrol car in the process — before being arrested in Brisbane.

The chase began around 10:35 a.m. when a hit-and-run victim went to the Bayview Police Station to give a report, according to SFPD Sgt. Neville Gittens.

“As the officer was getting information from the victim, the suspect’s vehicle drove by,” he said.

The officer put out the information on the suspect’s vehicle, a 2006 silver Honda Ridgeline pickup truck. Shortly after, an officer on patrol saw the vehicle near Third Street and Underwood Avenue, and attempted to make an arrest, but “the car took off,” Gittens said.

At another turn, the suspect, Manuel E. Antonio, drove his truck onto the sidewalk to go around vehicles stopped at a light and struck a female officer who was on foot, hitting her arm. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment.

Antonio managed to drive away from the scene, eventually making it to the highway onramp, according to police. An officer attempted to use his patrol car to block the vehicle’s entrance, but Antonio backed into the police car and continued the chase down Highway 101, heading south.

He then hit the center divider, and debris from the truck was launched to the other side of the highway, where it struck another vehicle, causing minor damage, police said. The driver of that vehicle was unharmed, Gittens said.

Due to the damage to the truck, Antonio wasforced to stop, ending the chase in Brisbane.

Antonio was taken into custody and has been charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, felony evasion and felony hit-and-run.

According to a California Highway Patrol dispatch officer, the chase had little impact on traffic.
