CEO found dead in Mid-Market homicide after being reported missing

The CEO of a wheelchair company was found dead Wednesday night in an apparent homicide when police performed a welfare check on him at an address in the mid-Market area, according to authorities.

Bart Kylstra, a 52-year-old resident of San Francisco, has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as the man officers found dead at around 11:30 p.m on the 1000 block of Market Street, between Sixth and Seventh streets.

Officer Joseph Tomlinson, a police spokesperson, said officers found Kylstra dead after a woman called Wednesday to report him as a missing person. Police found Kylstra at an address where the caller believed he might be.

Tomlinson declined to provide further information about the woman and her connection to Kylstra but said she was not anonymous. Tomlinson also could not provide details about how Kylstra was killed.

“It’s so fresh,” Tomlinson said of the investigation.

Kylstra is listed on LinkedIn as the CEO of Rio Mobility, which sells products that turn wheelchairs into electric scooters and is located in a suite at 1005 Market St. Kylstra is also named in state records associated with the company.

Police have not identified a suspect or made an arrest.

The killing marked the 41st reported homicide of the year in San Francisco.
