Months shy of its 100th birthday, John’s Grill in San Francisco today is revealing a new 150-pound Maltese Falcon statue that will replace one stolen earlier this year.

The original bird sculpture was stolen Feb. 12 in broad daylight, according to officials. Despite a $25,000 reward offered and a police investigation, the statue was never recovered.

The new bird, about a third larger than the original, was created by the director of sculpture for the San Francisco Academy of Art University, Peter Schifrin, and his students, officials said.

At a luncheon today at 1:30 p.m., the bronze-and-lead bird will be revealed for the first time.

John’s Grill is at 63 Ellis St., between Stockton and Powell streets.
