Malfunctioning track switch slows Muni metro system

A malfunctioning switch at Muni’s Castro station is causing system-wide delays across the metro system.

The most recent delay began at about 11:45 a.m. this morning, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesperson Erica Kato confirmed. A switch enabling trains to crossover tracks is responsible for the delay, she said, which is impacting the J, K, L, M and N Muni metro lines.

The Muni Metro system experienced another delay earlier in the morning as well, according to the SFMTA Twitter account. That delay was cleared just before 10 a.m.

As of Wednesday afternoon the K, L and M metro lines are operating but “there is congestion,” Kato said. The N-Judah and J-Church lines, however, are only operating on the street, she said.

N and J riders can take any other train to Church station to make transfers to the N-Judah and J-Church, according to the SFMTA Twitter page, and Caltrain bound N-Judah customers should take the T-Third instead.

Twitter user @OHsnapDEVIN, who describes themselves as a Full STack Web Developer and lover of San Francisco, tweeted “MUNI IS A JOKE THIS WEEK,” referencing a Tweet from SFMTA advising of the Casto station-related delay.

“I’ve had to take other modes of transit to work the past 3 days,” @OHsnapDEVIN wrote to SFMTA.

Another Twitter user “Annette,” who goes under the Twitter handle @meowmeowface143, said she was “dumped” at West Portal with hundreds of others, and Tweeted a photo showing people crowding the sidewalks near the station near 10 a.m.
