Making mischief with art and beverages

San Francisco artist Ian Ross has been busy making mischief at the corner of Potrero Avenue and 18th Street.

On Friday, Ross finished up mural on the side of 595 Potrero Ave., a building housing the Requisite Barber, as part of a promotion for Seattle-based Elysian Brewing called “Mischief Makers” designed to support artists in their own communities.

Ross’ big abstract work, unveiled on Space Exploration Day, is inspired by two Elysian offerings: Space Dust IPA and Dayglow IPA.

Publicists for the program — which also sponsored murals in Austin, New York, Orlando and Seattle — say the art works are “representative of each artist’s unique style and their individual interpretation of ‘mischief’ as exemplified by Elysian’s unique spirit and hand-crafted bottle artwork.”


So far, things seem to be going well at Last Rites, a new bar at 718 14th St. in The City.

Last month, patrons waited outside the door for the 6 p.m. opening of the bar, which specializes in high-proof rum drinks created by cocktail experts Susan Eggett and Sevan Araneda.

Darker and more mystical than your average mid-century tiki bar, Last Rites gives patrons the feeling of being marooned in a tropical jungle. The bar in the front room is actually made of airplane fuselage, surrounded by big banyan tree roots, foliage, boulders and stone stone idols. (Designs are by James Lagoc, Brian Sullivan and owner Justin Lew; Ian Scalzo directs the joint.)

The mixologists aren’t messing around. The bar’s namesake offering, Last Rites, has Mount Gay Black Barrel rum, house white rum, overproof rum blend, lime, passion fruit syrup, blackstrap molasses syrup and Last Rites mix, and comes set on fire. It’s one of several on the evocative menu (which looks like a manifest from a ship) available for “limited consumption.”


Trick Dog, the Mission district bar which won a 2017 Spirited Award for world’s best cocktail menu, has introduced a new “semi-annual cocktail menu,” with creations made in partnership with top San Francisco chefs, including Dominique Crenn, Gabriela Cámara, David Nayfeld, Craig Stoll, Tom McNaughton and Ryan Pollnow, Traci des Jardins, Ravi Kapur, Brandon Jew, Kim Alter, Melissa Perello, Evan and Sarah Rich, Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski and Angela Pinkerton.

The special menu, which runs through Dec. 31, also doubles as a cookbook; proceeds from sales go to La Cocina, the nonprofit that supports low-income food entrepreneurs and helps them gain financial security.
