Maddening political trends in today’s top word searches

I somehow ended up on a Dictionary.com article about words that were trending.

This means that the site gathers data from all the searches done in a week to determine which was most popular. And do you what was at the top of the list? “Concentration camp.”

As the article explains, “Comparisons of the shelters where immigrant children are being placed after removal from their parents to concentration camps boosted searches for the meaning of that term 2,408 percent.”

I don’t know what’s more urgent proof that we are living through dire times: the fact that the news is crazy enough to force Dictionary.com to become political, or that our populace is so ignorant that millions of people needed to look up what the definition of concentration camp is.

The article goes on to articulate other words trending last week. Next on the list was “illegal alien,” which Dictionary.com made sure to note was “often considered offensive.”

Following that was the word “cage,” which spiked 288 percent after “Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy said immigrant children were not being held in cages, but actually enclosures with “walls out of chain-link fences.”

Dictionary.com then embedded a brilliant tweet from its account that takes an incisive swipe at Doocy. It read: “Searches for the meaning of ‘cage’ have climbed 279 percent in the past 24 hours on dictionary.com. The definition has not changed.”

Damn! Who would’ve thought that Dictionary.com would get so woke?

Unfortunately, the article gets even sadder. The phrase “la familia,” which means “the family” in Spanish was up 200 percent last week as children were being separated from their families.

And “tender age” jumped an astounding 5,443 percent after Rachel Maddow broke the news that the Tr*mp Administration had created “tender age” camps to house the babies and toddlers kidnapped from their parents.

I know that the San Francisco Examiner used to be a conservative rag, and judging by many of the shitty things said in the comments section, there are still a fair number of right wing people who still read it. But if you’re one of these folks and you still support Tr*mp, you’re just as much of a monster as he is.

Now I know you’re gonna say, “This is a policy practiced by Obama and Clinton” because that’s what Fox News, the same vile propaganda machine that tried to redefine the word “cage,” tells you. But that’s a bullshit myth. The policy of separating children and parents was instituted on April 6, 2018 and envisioned by John Kelly and Stephen Miller to use children as bargaining chips and deterrents against immigration. If you don’t have a problem with this, once again, you are a monster.

And if your argument against undocumented immigrants is “These are the laws of our country so they must be followed,” you’re using the same arguments used to support slavery, exclude Chinese, render same sex marriage illegal and prosecute interracial relationships. This bullshit argument will be looked upon by history the same way we look back on Prohibition, with incredulity.

Think about this: How bad would things have to get for you to flee your country, penniless, just so your kids might have a better life? Really think about it. That’s who the U.S. government is punishing. And how would your ancestors who came to this country answer that question? Weren’t they also leaving something untenable for a better life?

Unlike what Donnie would have you believe, the people coming to the U.S. aren’t animals and rapists. They are people fleeing horrible things in an attempt to make a better life for their families.

Plus, according to the Center for Migration Studies, since 2007, two-thirds of people joining the undocumented workforce entered the country legally with a visa and have decided to overstay.

Which, of course, shows yet another thing Donnie boy is wrong about: that a border wall will be anything more than a multi-billion eyesore meant to fill the hole where his heart should be.

I just checked out Dictionary.com, and the definition of “monster” is “a person who excites horror by wickedness, cruelty, etc.,” which perfectly describes Tr*mp. The question is, does it describe you?
