Officials have delayed the installation of a third ShotSpotter system in San Francisco because the communications system on which it relies has yet to be restored.

Terry Childs, a network administrator, was charged in July with changing the passwords to the network and locking out city
agencies.

ShotSpotter, a system that pinpoints the location of gunfire, was scheduled for installation in the Mission district this summer, according to Lt. Mikail Ali with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. The City’s internal fiber-optic network was supposed to be the backbone of the installation.

More than two square miles of The City — in Bayview-Hunters Point and the Western Addition — are already equipped with the technology.
