Unoccupied vehicle falls into large sinkhole

An unoccupied vehicle fell into a large sinkhole in Richmond Thursday night, police said.

The sinkhole was reported at about 6:40 p.m. near El Portal and Via Verdi. Preliminary reports indicated two vehicles had fallen into the 40-by-60-foot sinkhole, and emergency crews responded for a possible rescue, Lt. Dave Harris said.

However, responding crews determined just one vehicle had was in the hole and it was unoccupied, Lt. Shawn Pickett said.

He said the city’s public works department responded to the intersection to assess the situation and that the road will remain closed indefinitely.
