While most residents will be taking the Fourth of July holiday off Wednesday, The City’s parking meters will still be working.

Formerly a free parking day for motorists, meters have been enforced on the Fourth since 2010. A policy change approved by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which manages parking in The City, means the only free parking days are now Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

The SFMTA has justified the new strategy by saying that most businesses are open on holidays such as the Fourth, and parking meters are designed to encourage turnover in front of commercial establishments.

Although the SFMTA will keep its meters on, Muni vehicles will be operating on a holiday schedule, meaning less service and later start times.
