The first streetcar ever used by Muni is being rolled out next month for a trip down The Embarcadero to kick off the transit system’s festivities for its 100-year anniversary.

Considered by many to be the nation’s first publicly owned transit system, the Municipal Railway began operating Dec. 28, 1912. On April 5, the agency will celebrate its 100th year by trotting out the meticulously restored No. 1 car for the 10 a.m. trip. State and local leaders, including U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, are scheduled to take part in the event.

The streetcar will start from the Market Street Railway Museum, said Ed Reiskin, director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which now operates Muni.

Feinstein also is slated to be joined by Mayor Ed Lee, Reiskin said Tuesday at the agency’s board of directors meeting.

Other events also are planned for Muni’s centennial.
