The America’s Cup, and its accompanying public transportation plan, will be up for approval this week.
To account for the throngs of visitors expected to arrive for this year’s sailing regatta in San Francisco, The City has developed a comprehensive transportation plan, consisting of bike-sharing stations, extended historic streetcar routes, enhanced pedestrian paths and express transit lines.
On Tuesday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency board of directors will vote to approve those transit initiatives — collectively called the People’s Plan. The SFMTA board will also be asked to approve exemptions of the state environmental quality laws to allow the America’s Cup to be carried out.
The America’s Cup, a series of yacht racing events, will begin this August in San Francisco, the host site of the competition. It’s expected to create $1 billion for the local economy and attract thousands of visitors over the next two years.
