A $21 million plan to rehabilitate 80 aging Muni buses was approved Tuesday.
The 40-foot diesel vehicles, called Neoplan buses, have been in service since 2000 and are nearing the end of their useful life, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates Muni.
The rehabilitation program will fix up the brakes, suspensions, transmissions, radiators and other aspects of the buses, which run on such lines as the 71-Noriega, 28-19th Avenue and 19-Polk.
So far, federal and local sources have provided $12 million for the program. There is a $9 million gap for the plan, but the SFMTA board of directors still elected to move forward with the plan Tuesday. The agency is pursuing federal, state, and local sources to make up the remaining balance of the program.
