Cyclists are having an easier time parking their two-wheelers in San Francisco, thanks to the recent increase in bike corrals on city streets.

Last year, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which oversees bike policies in The City, installed 15 new corrals — bike racks installed in parking lanes formerly reserved for cars. The new corrals were all placed in areas of The City with high concentrations of cyclists. With the 15 new corrals, there are now 24 total in San Francisco.

Each corral can hold anywhere from 8 to 12 bikes and they only occupy one parking spot. Along with encouraging cycling, the corrals also open up sidewalk space for café seating and increase visibility and safety for motorists at intersections, the SFMTA said.

“As more San Franciscans choose to get around the city on their bikes, it’s vital that we have the infrastructure in place to support them,” SFMTA director Ed Reiskin said in a release on Tuesday. “Our bike team will continue to work with neighborhoods and businesses to improve bike access for our thriving merchant corridors.”
