Sheriff lobbies for new jail site

Sheriff Greg Munks on Tuesday will ask the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors to move forward with a new jail at a site on Chemical Way in Redwood City.

The county had initially hoped to build a new jail in downtown Redwood City near the existing jail, but city officials have been negotiating to obtain a parcel of land on Chemical Way instead.

Munks said the new site is larger and would allow the jail to be built more efficiently and more economically.

A total of 680 secure beds are planned for the 257,112-square-foot new jail, plus 88 nonsecure beds. The current jail’s average daily population was 968 inmates in 2009.
