Schools: Mixed results on parcel taxes

Cabrillo Unified School District took another blow Tuesday night with the failure of a fifth attempt to pass a tax measure.

District officials needed to win a two-thirds majority for Measure S, a $175 five-year parcel tax. But with all 31 precincts reporting, only 61.7 percent of voters gave the tax the thumbs-up.

"I think the two-thirds majority is a really high bar to hit," Miramar resident Jayne Battey said. "But with the timing of Devil’s Slide, I think we’re particularly challenged this year."

Conversely, Menlo Park City School District’s Measure U, with 100 percent of 26 precincts reporting, garnered 69.9 percent support. The 35-year, $91 million bond required 55 percent approval to pass.
