The recent uproar about the high earnings of city officials in Bell has prompted municipalities in San Mateo County and throughout the state to release salary information to the public.

A League of California Cities survey released this month displays self-reported compensation information for city managers in the 468 cities and towns that have managers, including 18 in San Mateo County. The organization said it had a 90 percent response rate to the survey.

The survey comes after the firestorm resulting from the July discovery of Robert Rizzo’s $784,637 annual salary as Bell city manager for the mainly working-class Southern California suburb. The goal of the survey was to create greater transparency between citizens and city officials.

“It’s very important for the public to know this information so they can hold their elected representatives accountable,” said Peter Scheer, executive director of the First Amendment Coalition. “One important aspect of that process is to know what they are paid and how that amount paid on behalf of citizens, through tax
dollars, compares to other cities.”  

The survey information will be updated after the state Controller’s Office receives more-detailed information on compensation levels for city employees Oct. 1, which is required by the new Local Government Compensation Reporting program, according to the League of California Cities.
