The 3-minute Interview: Michelle DeAngelis

Michelle DeAngelis

SAN FRANCISCO — The life coach and author of “Get a Life That Doesn’t Suck” will discuss why good intentions do not count, on the ABC7 afternoon talk show “The View from the Bay” at 3 p.m. Friday.

How do you know if your life sucks? If you have all the symptoms of things that suck, like anger, resentment, guilt, doubt, worry ... feeling unfulfilled.

How can people better balance their lives? One of the techniques I have people do is to look where their lives have a bunch of clutter and get rid of it. There’s physical clutter, mental clutter and emotional clutter. Make a list of everything that makes you feel good or brings you joy. And then write down everything that makes you feel bad, whether it’s in your body, mind or spirit. Then, evaluate based on what’s working for you what to keep and what to get rid of. It could be a scheduling problem or it could be a friend.

How can people better deal with stressful situations? The B.A.C.K. technique is the 911 remedy for when everything sucks, like when your plane gets canceled or you run out of gas. It stands for breathe, acknowledge, choose and kick into gear. Just taking that deep breath is so powerful because it allows you to respond more thoughtfully rather than having a raw emotional reaction. Then, acknowledge what you’re feeling. It lets it dissipate. You choose to feel differently; you choose the outcome you want. Kick into gear is the action you take based on your choice.
