A pit bull mauled a pregnant woman to death inside her Pacifica home Thursday.

Darla Napora, 32, was found dead in the front room of her home in the 500 block of Reina Del Mar Ave., according to Pacifica police Captain Dave Bertini. Her husband discovered the body after returning home from work.

Police arrived at about 12:15 p.m. and found the victim with "major trauma, [and] was not breathing or responsive." Officers initiated CPR and other life saving measures but were unsuccessful.

The husband told police that the 2-year-old male pit bull attacked his wife after he had gone to work. The dog had not been neutered, according to police.

The attacking dog had been secured in the backyard of the residence while police were investigating the death. While personnel were tending to the victim, the dog escaped from the backyard and approached first responders on scene, according to police. Officers then shot the dog three times, killing it.

Pacifica police have not had to deal with a fatal dog mauling in at least two decades, Bertini said.

“We’ve had plenty of attacks, but we’ve never had a death, at least in 25 years.”
