The shooting in East Palo Alto that killed a 3-month-old and wounded his parents was a case of mistaken identity, police said Monday.

The shooting occurred on the 400 block of Wisteria Drive early Sunday morning, with two men approaching a car that had a family of four from Redwood City.

The gunmen opened fire, hitting 22-year-old Oscar Jiminez, his wife, 22-year-old Ivonne Garcia-Lopez, and their 3-month-old son, Izak Jesus Jiminez-Lopez. The child was struck in the head by a bullet and later died. The couple’s 4-year-old child who was also in the car at the time was not injured.

Police announced an arrest in the case Monday — a 17-year-old — and that they also had a 16-year-old in custody.

The shooting suspect reportedly told police that the event was in retaliation for a gang fight two weeks earlier during which he was beat up by Sureño gang members. The family, which was in East Palo Alto for a baby shower, however, was not affiliated with a gang, police said.
