Motorcycle patrols to target impaired drivers tonight

A team of traffic officers on motorcycles will be on the lookout for impaired drivers on San Francisco's streets tonight, according to San Francisco police and a spokeswoman for "Avoid the 8," a multi-jurisdictional anti-drunk driving program.

The team will start their rounds at around 7 p.m. and return to the police department at around 3 a.m.

"There are a lot of motorcycles on the road, and people often don't notice that we are police officers until they hear the siren," said San Francisco Police Department traffic Sgt. Neil Swendsen in a prepared statement. "It's not uncommon for drivers to commit a traffic offense right in front of us."
