A fire in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood Monday afternoon in which a man was seriously burned has been deemed accidental,
fire department spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said today.

The fire broke out inside a second-floor apartment at a three-story building at 1366 Haight St. at about 12:30 p.m., Talmadge said.

A man living in the apartment was taken to a burn unit at St. Francis Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Talmadge said the man is believed to have inhaled smoke and gases in the fire. There was no immediate update on his condition today, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

No one else was injured in the blaze, which was extinguished in less than half an hour, Talmadge said.

Damage to the property and its contents has been estimated at $270,000.
